Last week my husband and I attend an ILLEGAL HOME POSSESSION SEMINAR presented by Anita Alvarez, Cook County State’s Attorney’s Community Justice Center in Conjunction with the Chicago Police Department. It was extremely informative and frightening at the same time. Please read and follow through on this. It is important.
Did you know that it is easier to steal your home than it is to steal your car?
Here is how you can prevent that from happening:
Two things need to be done. #1 You need to fill out a form for free property fraud alert. This form allows the Recorder of Deeds to do 2 things: 1. Advise you if anyone files papers in regard to your property. 2. Allows Recorder of Deeds office to take action on your part against illicit activity with NO cost to you. This is ONLY EFFECTIVE as of the date of the form filing. #2 You also will need to do a public search at the Recorder of Deeds with regard to your property tax # to determine if there has been any illegal filings.
The website is http://www.cookreorder.com and this is where you can fill out the FREE Property Fraud Alert Form. The same site http://www.cookreorder.com is also where you can search public records. They will ask you for your property tax #. 312.603.4000 is the fraud hotline number. Mario Reed is the head of the property fraud dept. 312.603.5936. Mario.firstname.lastname@example.org Note that he or any of his staff can answer questions. Also be sure to check any property you own and rent in Cook County. If you own something outside of Cook County or in another state you need to check with the recorder of deeds in the county where the property is located.
