Provision Theater Company is offering an all new Educational Outreach Program for the 2013-2014 School Year. Lead by Educational Director, Priscilla Hummel, this troupe of diverse, professional actors will perform various productions at both primary and secondary school throughout Chicago. Each 40-minute show focuses on challenging issues that young people face in their academic environment—such as bullying, prejudice, and peer pressure—and presents practical tools that equip students to overcome these challenges in an appropriate and positive way.
Just last week 175 students from the 7th and 8th grades of Smyth, Perez, St. Nicks and St. Pius attended a production of NEW GIRL, by Josh Hornbeck, at the theater. The synopsis of the play is as follows. Rachael is the new girl at Clements High. She wants to fit in and get along with everyone. But when two of the school’s popular kids attempt to sabotage her friendships with two of the school’s outcasts, Rachel learns that the way she treats others can have serious consequences.
After the performance there was a very active exchange between the students and the performers. Discussion involved preventing cyber-bullying, discovering the consequences of gossip and rumors, examining both subtle and overt forms of harassment and understanding personal and social responsibility.
