Join us for a Clean Up Scavenger Hunt at Smyth School

kids green apple
We are hosting a Clean Up Scavenger Hunt at Smyth Elementary on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.   We will be collecting litter in the schoolyard and along sidewalks of the surrounding blocks, scavenger hunt style, and then will be having a brief discussion of re-use and recycling to inspire the students, parents and neighbors.

We will be focused on the fact that there is magic in being able to create “something from nothing” using some of the Maxwell St. garden decorations as examples- and in explaining that through recycling and re-use some of the things we would otherwise think of as trash have real value (the “treasures”.)

We will have vinyl gloves for the litter picking and apples for the students.

The school staff will have cleared the schoolyard of any broken glass (which they are required to do.) They do litter cleanup rounds every day but I have asked that they not do their regular rounds on Monday afternoon or Tuesday to ensure that we will have plenty to collect.

And the Garden fence is always in need of a little extra t.l.c.

If you would like to help with set up, sign in, or help a team for the scavenger hunt, please contact me in advance or show up in front of the school at 2:00 p.m. on the day of the event.

You can also find out more at the USGBC Illinois Green Apple Day of Service website.

Please also pass this invitation along to anyone who lives in the vicinity who might be interested in meeting and working with students, teachers, parents and neighbors.

Thank you!
